At Windy Hill Farm and Preserve, we believe that good things take time, nurtured by care, patience, and purpose. Earth Day provides an opportunity to reflect on our daily choices in caring for the land and how those choices influence the kind of place we aspire to be.
Before we began hosting dinners at Wilder and offering weekend stays, this land served as a family escape, a working cattle farm, and a quail hunting preserve. This legacy of living close to the land still guides us today. Our values of conservation, hospitality, and stewardship first took root here, shaping our path forward.
Rooted in Responsibility
Our farm remains family-owned, with three generations of farmers at the helm. We have worked diligently to restore the land by growing food responsibly, creating habitats for wildlife, and discovering better ways to live in harmony with the seasons. Whether it’s how we plant a garden bed or care for our animals, we strive to honor this land each day.
Wilder: A Garden-to-Table, Zero-Waste Vision
At the heart of our culinary experience is Wilder, our garden-to-table restaurant. Just steps from the restaurant’s kitchen, our garden flourishes with seasonal produce, herbs, and flowers. Everything we grow on-site is utilized purposefully, helping us move towards a zero-waste environment. For ingredients we can’t cultivate ourselves, we partner with nearby farms that share our values – providing honest, carefully sourced ingredients.
A Working Farm That Works with Nature
Across Windy Hill, you’ll find a small but thriving farm rooted in care for the animals, the land, and the people we feed. Our pigs, hens, honeybees, and abundant garden all play a part in supporting our kitchen and living out our values of sustainability and respect. This close relationship between the farm and the food we serve is something we’re proud to share. Whether guests are dining with us or joining a hands-on cooking demo, we hope they leave with a deeper appreciation for where their food comes from, and how thoughtful farming can nourish both people and place.
Learning by Doing
We believe that the best way to understand the land is to spend time on it. That’s why we offer garden tours, nature walks, and even beekeeping experiences – allowing guests to learn about native habitats, the importance of pollinators, and how the farm fits into the bigger picture.
Taking it Home
If there’s one thing we hope our guests carry with them, it’s the understanding that sustainability is not about grand gestures; it’s about the small choices we make every day. Whether it involves composting scraps, planting a garden, or shopping locally, these little steps add up.
This Earth Day, we are grateful for our home, for the people who help care for it, and for the chance to keep learning and sharing.
If you find yourself at Windy Hill, we hope you’ll walk the fields, taste what’s in season, and leave with something that inspires you to care for your own little patch of the world.
